'Twas the Night by Robin Reed: Giveaway

Title: ‘Twas the Night

Author: Robin Reed

Published: November 8th, 2012

Word Count: 35,000

Genre: Horror Comedy

Content Warning: Comedy Horror Violence

Age Recommendation: 13+

Synopsis:
Rollo is the overworked, stressed-out Head Elf at the North Pole. As he prepares for Christmas Eve, he has to deal with toys that look like they’re having sex, terrorist reindeer, and worst of all, the sudden death of Santa Claus. Rollo has to save Christmas after he finds out that Santa is not just dead — he is undead.

‘Twas the Night is a novella of approximately 35,000 words. It is a satire and contains adult language and themes.

Excerpt
It wasn’t a fit night out for man nor elf. But then it never was at the North Pole, where it gets so cold that Frosty would freeze his snowballs off. The view from Rollo’s office window was darkness. Driving snow rattled against the pane, and the wind howled like a six year old who got nothing but socks for Christmas.
When he first got to the North Pole he thought the view was spectacular. In the sunny season the fantastic ice formations and the reflections of sunlight through them were something to see. But it never changed, and after a few hundred years anything can become boring. He shook his head and sighed. He was a long way from the woodlands of his youth, where he had nothing on his mind but frolicking and scaring the occasional woodcutter.
Rollo shouldn’t have been staring out the window and thinking about times long gone. It was the busy season, and there was a lot of work to do. He took a sip of coffee and turned to the large computer monitor on his desk.
There was a Facebook message from Jay, asking if they were still on for poker on Thursday. Rollo couldn’t think about that, or anything, until after the delivery. He decided to answer later. He opened reports from his staff. There was a problem in inventory. A whole container of talking Barbies were missing. They had to be in the complex somewhere, but nobody could find them.

About the Author

Although Sabrina Rawson had been physically writing for two years the ideas that conceived her first novel had been percolating in her mind for many years. In many ways she found life experiences had influenced her story although written in fantasy format.

Nelson Mandela’s words inspired her:
“There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”

No truer words could have been said. After her first cancer battle four years ago, she was in the mindset to survive, get back to my swing of things. Problem was she couldn’t. She wasn’t the same person anymore. She relapsed by the end of the first year. She survived that experience exhausted and has had multiple tumors pop up ever since. To say her health presented a mental and physical challenge was putting it mildly. She wanted to be more, do more, and was determined to reinvent herself along the way.

What she left behind after that first surgery, was her passion for life. Cancer didn’t take that away, she put buried it along with her drive and ambition. Her creative muse happily skipped right along with the rest of her dreams leaving her disconnected. She had to rediscover herself and it was a slow personal process. Four years post her first surgery and even if she had to do it all over again tomorrow, so what! She refused to settle for a life less than what she could create for herself.

Sabrina has published works with Survivor’s Review Online Magazine and Titan InKorp Online eMag. She published the two novels within a New Adult Urban Fantasy Romance called A Novel of Four Realms, titled Briksanna’s Sacrifice (Book One) and Katerina’s Hope (Book Two). Book three is due to publish early spring 2015.

Sabrina lives in Sonoma County heart of the wine country of California enjoying life in the rural land happily married to a wonderful supportive husband. You can always find her reading a book or cooking a meal for her multitude of children.

Excerpt

There’s a whole host of benefits allotted to those, who like myself, possess these very specialized set of skills. One of the benefits is, that afterward, you sleep really good at night and I mean really good.

What?

Well, it’s true, it’s hard to believe I know, but trust me it’s true. Sam, my uncle, sent me to this exotic land that used to smell of frankincense and myrrh. He sent us there, my brothers-in-arms and me, so that we could become proficient in the art of death. We were good at what we did too, because now it only smells of gunpowder, burnt oil, and death. That’s a hellofa predicament you’ve found
yourself in, isn’t it?

Well, at least now you know I’m good with a gun and thanks to my Uncle Sam I am also very comfortable with a blade. This ten inch beauty here is a staple, it’s sharp enough to be use as machete. But this one, with the gut hook, is my all
time favorite and I’ll show you why here in a minute. Now, I can understand why you broke into my home, these are tough times, and a guys gotta eat I get that. I do.

Maybe I would have let you live if you had simply demanded my money and jewels, but, then again, I was never known for being charitable.

And They All Lived Happily Ever After! is currently available in various formats, including audio book. In your experience, which format was harder to produce and get published?
Hi Lindy, thanks so much for having me on your blog today. Ok straight down to business which format of And They All Lived Happily Ever After! was harder to produce and get published? The publishing part for both formats was the easiest. Because the printed version has multiple layouts, fonts, and colored graphics all in the same novel the layout for this book was a nightmare to accomplish and toward the end I was damning my own creativity! Lol. The printed format of this book really challenged me as an artist because they only thing I didn’t do by myself was the editing.
Working on the printed format of And They All Lived Happily Ever After! gave me a renewed appreciation for graphic and interior designers. I love my little basic book cover because I designed it myself but it took me almost a week to figure out how to do that little page curl at the bottom of the cover, lol, how sad is that?
The hardest part for the audio format was audio format was one the waiting, and two keeping it a secret. The reason I wasn’t telling everyone that I was getting an audio book was because I gave Kay Richardson, the narrator, an open ended deadline. When I hire someone to work for me I don’t want them to feel pressured or get stressed out because most people don’t work well under those conditions. There’s no point in standing over someone’s shoulder every step of the way, if you have to do that then you might as well do the work yourself. I know that I can’t so I like to give people room to work. This project took two years to complete and I think it was totally worth the wait, and I hope you think so too. Not only is there the version that’s available for free on Podiobooks, I am also getting a deluxe version that will be sold on Amazon and iTunes that has bonus features not heard on Podiobooks and surprise content not available in the printed version!
Thanks again for letting me hang out with you today, this was so much fun. Thank you!

Age Recommendation: 18+

“Why am I still here?”

He was born Richard Franchitti, but his friends call him Ricky. Welcome to his funeral.

Excerpt
I’d met Catherine Maddox (now the widow Catherine Frachitti) through a friend of mine. My best friend, in point of fact. Bill Henly.
While they were dating.
That tidbit must sound inherently evil. There are rules, especially among guys. The Man Code, to be more specific. Every male on the planet is born with these rules branded into his DNA. Don’t date a friend’s ex, don’t have sex with a friend’s girlfriend, so on and so forth.
Let the record show that I am no home wrecker! Bill and Catherine had been seeing each other when I met her. Nothing serious, and for reasons only known to them, their relationship didn’t last. After Bill did the requisite guy thing (read: talked post-breakup smack about her), I did the right thing and asked him if he’d be okay with me asking her out.
The conversation went something like this:
Me: So, you’re not dating Cat anymore, huh?
Bill: Nope.
Me: Um, would it be cool if I asked her out?
Bill: Yeah, sure.
It was a conversation for the ages. A manly conversation of epic proportions. It may seem flimsy to an outsider, but to guys it was volumes’ worth.
I let the breakup embers fade, and a few weeks later, when I’d mustered up the testicular fortitude, I asked Catherine out. After a moment’s thought, she said yes. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Dating Catherine put no apparent stress on my relationship with Bill. Good looking in an All-American way, he never lacked for female companionship. At six-foot-five and almost as broad, he towered over my meager five-foot-eight. He’d played football in high school and college, earning an athletic scholarship to Princeton University, but blew out his knee in his second year. His spare time no longer filled with practices and games, he hunkered down and focused on his studies which paved the way to his future career as a financial advisor. Still, he remained an ever faithful workout freak. The combination of good looks, muscular build, and his large salary lured many a willing woman into his bed. Catherine was no exception, but that wasn’t entirely Bill’s doing.
The story is a simple one. Back in the day the three of us were nigh inseparable. Catherine and I were always double-dating with Bill and his love du jour. Even if he wasn’t seeing anybody (the exception to the rule), the three of us would go out to eat, see movies, hang out on lawn chairs in the summer drinking concoctions with little umbrellas in them.
It was on one such occasion when things took a change for the pornographic. I’ll never forget that day as long as I live. Or as long as I’m dead.
That day is where this story truly starts.

Guest Post
Thank you, Lindy, for taking part in the Funeral with a View Blog Tour. I promise not to make a complete wreck of your page! And welcome to all your Zartians. My name’s Matt Schiariti and I’ll be your captain for this flight. Please, sit back and enjoy the ride. It won’t be too painful, honest.
So, Lindy has asked me to write a guest post on the following topic: “Would you say you’re a perfectionist when it comes to your work?” That’s a great question, and one that I’ve often asked myself. I could answer it in a few simple words, but what fun would that be? Instead, I think I’ll shed a little light on what transpired with Funeral with a View, from first draft to final product. Then you, dear reader, can decide if I’m a perfectionist or not. My fate is in your hands. Please, be gentle.
What would eventually become my first contemporary romance novel started out as a blank page in the early months of 2012. The idea for the book had been rolling around in my head for some time at that point, one that came to me when I asked myself, “A guy walks into his own funeral … then what?” Idea firmly entrenched in my gray matter, I sat down at the computer and typed and typed and typed. Five weeks and 130k words later, I had a manuscript.
Then it sat as I moved on to other things and published Words with Fiends, Ghosts of Demons Past, and my short story, Hollow, patiently slumbering in my hard drive until I revisited it in the summer of 2013. The first draft, as is so often the case, was a mess. But, after giving it a fresh read-through, I saw past the muck and knew that there was indeed the shell of a good story amidst the chaos. So after I published Ghosts of Demons Past, I set out to fix the book that I’d written by the seat of my pants, determined to hone it into something readable.
The editing process took me over a year. Here’s how it went:
I spent a couple months trimming the fat, sharpening dialogue, adding more meat to the characters and their motivations. At the end of that first edit, I’d killed over forty-thousand words. It was hard letting some of it go, but it had to be done. Convinced that I had a good beta version, I sent it to some beta readers (friends, readers who’ve liked my previous work, people who have beta read for me in the past) and the initial feedback was great! I was thrilled. “Finally!” I thought. “I can publish this thing after all!”
Wrong. While everyone liked the book, characters in particular, a few pointed out some hideous fatal flaws I’d failed to notice. As much as it pained me, it only took a few days’ worth of careful consideration to realize they were right. Back to the drawing board.
I dove into it again, eradicating scenes and plot threads I was initially too proud (perhaps stubborn is a better word now that I think about it) to erase from the historical record, and adding some scenes to improve continuity in the plot and add more background to the characters that, at that point, I felt were shadowing my every move because I’d already spent so much time with them. This was easily the most crucial point in the book’s young life, not to mention the most difficult. You see, Funeral with a View is very much a character-driven story. There is a great deal of emotional content in those thar pages. As such, it had to be spot on to work. It was during this time when I realized I was too heavy-handed with the story during its writing and that first wave of edits. There were times when I almost gave up on the whole thing. But I’m glad I didn’t. Anyway, this phase took me well into the summer months of 2014, at which point I sent it out to betas again. And the waiting began.
It wasn’t long before comments started to pour in. The verdict? It was much better than original. In fact, everyone loved it. There were, however, a few things that needed tightening up. Nothing extensive, but they were crucial elements I refused to let slip through into the published version. Was I happy that the book I’d worked on month-in, month-out for a year still needed work? Nope. I clenched my jaw, maybe even growled a little bit, but I rolled up my sleeves and did what needed doing. A couple more weeks of work and it was good to go, right?
Wrong! Having the story elements ironed out is one thing. Cleaning up any incorrect words and grammar is another. Formatting the book for kindle still remained. At this point, I already had the cover ironed out. The guy who produced the cover for Words with Fiends and Ghosts of Demons Past worked on Funeral with a View for me and it came out fantastic. At least I didn’t have to worry about that, right? Still, I had to prepare my word document for upload to the most popular e-reader on the planet. That process in and of itself is rather simple, but there’s always something.
The conversion to the kindle format didn’t take long at all, and once done I immediately uploaded to my Fire HD for yet another read (I lost count, but if I didn’t read the book twenty times during all this, I didn’t read it once) and spot check. As I was going through it, reveling in my workable table of contents and basking in a pro-looking e-book, I noticed a few things I’d done wrong. My quotes within dialogue and the spacing before and after ellipses and hyphens didn’t look right. Why did I notice this? The writing Gods or the universe looking out for me, maybe? Who’s to say? Whatever the reason, I thumbed through a few traditionally published paperbacks written by best sellers, then perused some of my favorite authors’ work on my kindle. Low and behold, I wasn’t just imagining things. I did indeed screw up some spacing and nested quote formatting. And here’s a fun fact: While in this checking mode of mine, I also noted my first line paragraph indents were way too big by Big 6 Publisher standards. Ugh! Does it ever end? So to get back on point, yadda, yadda, yadda, I went to my word document, put whatever was wrong back to rights, got those first line indents looking professional, then re-uploaded to my kindle for one more (and hopefully last!) read-through and spot check.
SUCCESS! Finally, after over a year of typing, editing, waiting for comments, considering comments, addressing comments, fixing typos and missed words, and getting every detail as accurately depicted as I could, I hit that exciting yet intimidating “Publish” button. The rest is history.
Could I have unleashed the book onto an unsuspecting reading populace in its earliest incarnation? Yes. What was to stop me from shrugging off what could be considered the minor formatting issues that only I knew about? Nothing, really. Were any of the beta readers holding a gun to my head in an attempt to force me into addressing their comments? Nope. My point in all this is that I have to be happy with the finally product at the end of the day. Many people had a hand in Funeral with a View, but when all is said and done everything is on me. I’m my own worst critic. “Okay” isn’t okay. “Good enough” isn’t good enough. If I was satisfied with “okay” or “good enough” I’d have made my life a heck of a lot easier and released it back in late 2013, early 2014. But that’s not how I do things. I’ll never publish anything until I’m certain it’s the best it can possibly be--from story, to writing, to look, to cover--and if I’m to expect people to invest their money and valuable time in something I’ve written, I think that’s the least I can do.

So tell me, readers, friends (future fans, perhaps?) … am I a perfectionist?

Arcus glared down at her. “Too easy.” Then he turned and started back for the bar. Before he could reach it, however, the door flew open and in walked three of the strongest looking men Arcus had ever seen. They shoved roughly past Arcus and marched straight for the table with the two girls and Joseph. Arcus stepped out of the way and waited.
“Hey, you!” The man in front had brown hair and a full beard, and a ship tattoo on his upper arm. He pointed angrily at Joseph. “Yeah, I know it’s you. Joshua or Joseph or something like that. I know what you did – Sam told me! Now you’re gonna die!”
“Excuse me, gentlemen.” Arcus had snuck up behind them and was standing with his hands behind his back. “What seems to be the trouble here?”
“This doesn’t concern you, boy,” one of the other two men snarled.
“Oh, but it does,” answered Arcus. “You see, this man may be an idiot, but he’s my friend, and I’m not going to stand idly by while you kill him. If anyone will kill him one of these days, it will be me.”
“Thanks, Arc.”
“No problem, idiot. Now, what did you do this time? Shall I guess that Sam is a girl?”
“Umm…that would probably be a safe bet. Though, honestly, I don’t remember anyone named Sam,” said Joseph.
“Why does that not surprise me?” quipped Arcus.
“What do you mean, you don’t know who Sam is?” shouted the leader. “Sam is my girl, and you… you…”
“Rocked her world?” Joseph grinned mischievously, and winked at the blonde and redhead, who had already backed away to another table, and were observing the proceedings with curiosity.
“Was that really necessary, Joseph?” Arcus questioned, as the leader roared in fury.
The leader lunged for Joseph, who ducked under the man’s arms, laughing. Arcus whipped his hands out from behind his back, and fire blazed up and down his forearms. He reached for the other two goons and slammed their heads together, scorching their hair. They bellowed in pain. The two girls and most of the other patrons all got up and rushed to the opposite side of the room, to avoid getting caught in the crossfire. The bartender cursed and demanded they break it up. The bystanders shouted taunts and cheers at the group, though to Arcus, the sounds all merged and then vanished altogether as he focused his magic. The man on the left pulled out a dagger, while the one on the right swung at Arcus. He absorbed the hit with his burning hands, which then flickered out. Then, he glared at the one with the knife. “Stop moving,” Arcus hissed in a hypnotic voice, and the spell immediately took effect as the man froze in place, still holding his knife awkwardly. He then turned to the other goon.
Joseph ducked another swing, and then another. He dodged a vicious kick by hopping toward the table. The leader was clearly becoming more and more enraged. Finally, he found purchase and punched Joseph square in the nose, which shattered. Blood sprayed everywhere. Joseph lost his rhythm, and fell hard onto the table. He raised his arms to block the assault, curling in on himself. The man hit him hard in the ribs with his elbow. Joseph held up a shaky hand to cast a small, glowing bolt of energy at his attacker, which struck him in the face, just under his left eye. The man grunted in pain, but didn’t pause in his assault.
Arcus shoved both of his hands flat against his remaining attacker’s chest. Lightning flashed from his palms and the man fell onto a chair without a sound. The chair crumbled to pieces under the onslaught as the smell of ozone filled the bar. Arcus turned to the leader. “Are you sure you don’t want to rethink this plan while you still have a chance? Take a look at your men; you are clearly outmatched.”

Light faded from the gloomy heavens as Shane climbed over his aunt and out of the passenger side of the cab. Ominous green clouds still choked the sky, but the air was calm and quiet. He walked a few yards away and turned around, staring absently at the wreckage and wanting to die. The truck door hung open, his aunt’s swollen feet sticking out. Crippling numbness overtook him, pressing in on all sides, as if he were being buried in wet cement. It invaded his mind, drowning his thoughts, and leaving only dejected questions that no one could answer. What was he supposed to do now? Why did he have to still be alive when everyone he loved was being taken from him?
“Help!” A girl’s hysterical voice ripped through his viscous daze like a bullet through a soda can. “Can you please? Help!”
The voice was pitched with agony and grief, but also very familiar.
Shane pivoted, the weight of his aunt’s nightmarish demise making it hard to move.
Two girls ran up the Douglas’ long, gravel driveway toward him. The taller one’s tangled, blonde hair billowed behind her. She wore cutoff blue jeans and a baggy, white T-shirt with crimson paint smeared across her chest. She dragged a shorter version of herself by the hand behind her as she ran. It took a second for Shane to register who it was.
“Kelly?” he shouted, his voice hoarse with shock. Struggling to break free of the catatonic state threatening to turn him into stone, he jogged heavily down the driveway to meet her.
“They killed my dad and my mom!” she shrieked, her eyes wild and her gaze darting like she expected some horror to jump out of the fields and attack her. “They went berserk and trampled them!”
“Wait—slow down.” Shane grabbed her shoulders to steady her. Her distress tore his mind away from the despair seeping through every part of his body, starving him for breath and welding his joints together. “Who killed your parents?” He realized the red on her clothes was fresh blood.
